HUD Section 8 citizenship verification

HUD Secretary Turner Implements Citizenship Verification for Section 8 Housing

Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner is enforcing new citizenship documentation requirements for all tenants receiving federal housing assistance through Section 8 programs.

The Trump administration’s HUD department has announced stricter verification protocols for federally-funded housing. The move aims to ensure that housing subsidies reach only eligible American citizens and legal residents.

New Citizenship Documentation Requirements

Under the new policy, all Section 8 housing applicants and current tenants must provide proof of citizenship status. The department is closing what officials describe as loopholes that previously allowed incomplete documentation during the application process.

“No longer will individuals be able to leave citizenship information blank or access HUD-funded housing without proper verification,” Turner said in a statement about the enforcement initiative.

Implementation and Impact

The HUD department has begun notifying housing authorities across the country about the updated verification requirements. Existing tenants will be required to submit documentation during their next lease renewal or recertification process.

Housing officials say the policy change is designed to redirect resources toward Americans and documented residents who qualify for assistance programs. The department has not yet released specific timelines for full implementation across all jurisdictions.
