An armed man was apprehended by Secret Service agents after breaching security at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C., on April 25, 2026, injuring one agent during the incident.
The breach occurred at the Washington Hilton approximately 20 minutes after President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump arrived at the event. Cole Allen, a 31-year-old teacher and Caltech graduate from Torrance, California, rushed a security checkpoint while armed with a shotgun and multiple knives.
What Happened
Allen was moving aggressively toward the ballroom when Secret Service agents intercepted him in the hotel lobby. The agents pinned the suspect to the floor before he could reach the main event space where the President was located.
During the confrontation, one Secret Service agent was shot at close range. The agent’s bulletproof vest saved his life, and he was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.
The President, First Lady, and numerous lawmakers and administration officials, including White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, were evacuated immediately following the threat.
The Response
Interim DC Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll confirmed that Allen appeared to be a “lone actor” and that there was no ongoing threat to the public following his capture. President Trump praised the injured agent’s resilience and commended law enforcement for their rapid response.
The White House Correspondents’ Association initially attempted to continue the event but announced its cancellation by 9:45 p.m. Trump stated he had wanted to proceed with his remarks but agreed to reschedule the dinner within 30 days.
What Comes Next
Federal investigators are examining Allen’s residence in California to determine a motive for the attack. The focus now centers on the injured agent’s recovery and planning the rescheduled event.
The incident has renewed discussions about security protocols at high-profile political gatherings in the nation’s capital.
