This is exactly what happened when my wife left for two weeks and we asked her best friend, Taylor, to stay with us in case I needed to attend medical appointments without our daughter. Taylor agreed without hesitation. Everything seemed perfect until the week before my wife departed, Taylor asked if her girlfriend, Alex, could come along. We had met Alex before and had no issues with her—she was bubbly, communicative, and respectful toward our daughter. We said yes. How could we have known what was coming?

The moment they arrived, something felt off. Alex was barely speaking and showed almost no interaction with our daughter, which wouldn’t have mattered if it weren’t her house too. When I tried to address this with Taylor, asking if this behavior was normal, she simply said yes and brushed it off. That should have been my first red flag. We went shopping that afternoon, and I noticed something troubling: Taylor was paying for everything Alex wanted. Later, when Alex mentioned craving a seafood boil and I explained there weren’t any good restaurants nearby, I offered to cook one for her if she got the ingredients. She agreed. At Walmart, when we checked out, Alex scanned her seafood under my total without asking. I was confused but didn’t want to embarrass her publicly. When I mentioned it to Taylor afterward, she explained that Alex doesn’t make much money and refuses to spend her own. The pattern was becoming clear.

As we drove home, Alex casually asked me to make spaghetti, lasagna, and two racks of ribs throughout the week. Taylor then mentioned they were leaving early Saturday to avoid an incoming rainstorm, instead of staying until Monday as originally planned.

Saturday morning arrived, and I woke up to get my daughter from her room. Instantly, the smell of weed hit me—and it was coming from her bedroom area and drifting outside the guest room. I texted Taylor immediately, asking if they had smoked in my house, especially given its proximity to my daughter’s room. She promised they hadn’t, then they quickly packed and left. The damage was already done.

My spouse and I had a serious conversation about what happened during those three days. We decided together that Alex would never be allowed back in our home. More significantly, we determined that Taylor could no longer be our daughter’s godmother due to the level of disrespect she had allowed and enabled. However, we told Taylor that she herself would still be welcome in our house if she chose to visit. I texted her our decision, expecting understanding from someone we’d trusted for years.

Taylor’s response shocked us. She said she wouldn’t be coming around anymore—not because Alex was banned, but because removing her as godmother made her feel like we didn’t trust her. She said she was heartbroken about losing the title and wouldn’t try to convince us to change our minds. The hardest part of this entire situation isn’t the disrespect we endured or even the smoking in our daughter’s room. It’s the realization that someone we considered family for years was willing to walk away from that relationship the moment we set a necessary boundary. True godparents don’t abandon their godchildren when accountability is required. They step up, they acknowledge wrongdoing, and they work to rebuild trust. Taylor’s departure felt less like heartbreak and more like confirmation that we made the right decision. Sometimes protecting your family means losing people you thought would always be there—and that’s okay.
