Venezuelan Migrant Arrested After Chicago Student Fatally Shot Near Campus

An 18-year-old Loyola University Chicago student, Sheridan Gorman, was fatally shot along the city’s lakefront in the early hours of Thursday morning. The incident occurred shortly after 1:30 a.m. while she was walking with friends. Authorities say a masked gunman shot Gorman in the head, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gorman, a resident of Westchester County, New York, was in her first year at the university. In a letter to students, Loyola University Chicago President Mark C. Reed expressed deep sorrow over the loss, offering condolences to her family, friends, and the campus community.

Police have taken a 25-year-old man into custody in connection with the case, though officials have not confirmed whether he has been formally charged. According to reports, investigators identified the suspect shortly after the shooting, in part due to a “distinct limp” observed during the search.

Federal immigration authorities have also become involved. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has filed an arrest detainer requesting that the suspect remain in custody. The Department of Homeland Security stated that the individual had previously been encountered by U.S. Border Patrol in 2023 and was later released. Records indicate he had also been arrested for a nonviolent offense in Chicago before being released again.

The case has drawn attention to broader debates over immigration enforcement and local policies. Federal officials have urged state and local authorities to cooperate with ICE detainers, while others continue to emphasize differing approaches to public safety and immigration.

Meanwhile, data reported by The New York Times shows that ICE arrests nationwide have increased significantly in the past year, with notable regional variations. The investigation into Gorman’s death remains ongoing.
