The “American Sharia Freedom Act” Firestorm

Republican lawmakers have introduced the “U.S. Courts Act of 2025,” widely dubbed the “American Sharia Freedom Act,” sparking a massive constitutional debate in Washington. Spearheaded by Rep. Chip Roy and conservative YouTuber Nick Shirley, the controversial bill seeks to strictly prohibit federal courts from citing, enforcing, or deferring to foreign legal systems that conflict with the U.S. Constitution.

Proponents argue the legislation is essential to protect American sovereignty and foundational freedoms. Both Rep. Chip Roy and Nick Shirley insist the bill does not target any specific religion, but rather prevents “imported legal theories” from influencing American jurisprudence. The measure has found significant public traction, with a recent Rasmussen poll indicating 68% approval, aligning closely with the “America First” agenda championed by Donald Trump.

However, the bill faces fierce pushback. Critics warn it could trigger widespread legal chaos by forcing reviews of past rulings. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries condemned the act as a dangerous assault on the separation of powers. Similarly, the ACLU has signaled impending legal action, accusing the bill’s sponsors of stoking Islamophobia and exploiting cultural anxieties for political gain.
