BREAKING: HOUSE PASSES SAVE AMERICA ACT TO REQUIRE PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP FOR VOTING

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed the SAVE America Act in a narrow 218–213 vote, marking a significant development in the ongoing national debate over election laws and voter eligibility. The legislation would require individuals to provide documented proof of U.S. citizenship—such as a birth certificate or passport—when registering to vote in federal elections.

Supporters of the bill, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, argue that the measure is necessary to strengthen election integrity and ensure that only eligible citizens participate in federal elections. They contend that existing systems rely too heavily on self-attestation and do not sufficiently prevent potential noncitizen voting, even if such cases are relatively rare.

Opponents, primarily Democratic lawmakers, voted overwhelmingly against the bill. They argue that requiring documentary proof of citizenship could create barriers for eligible voters, particularly those who may not have easy access to official documents. Critics also maintain that evidence of widespread noncitizen voting is limited and that current safeguards are already effective.

The debate surrounding the SAVE America Act reflects broader political divisions over election security, voting access, and immigration policy. Supporters frame the bill as a proactive step to protect the integrity of elections, especially ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Meanwhile, opponents view it as potentially restrictive and unnecessary.

Former President Donald Trump and other allies have long advocated for stricter voting requirements, including proof of citizenship, as part of broader election reform efforts. As the bill moves forward, its future in the Senate remains uncertain, where it is expected to face significant debate and scrutiny.

Overall, the passage of the SAVE America Act highlights the ongoing national conversation about how best to balance election security with voter access.
